A shower pan is the underlying component of a tile shower floor. Prior to the 1970’s, when PVC membranes were just being developed, shower pans were made of sheet lead. These lead pans were tied into the cast iron drains, and when two incompatible metals are in contact with each other over time, corrosion and deterioration result.
As the lead pan deteriorates, osmosis draws the water from the corroded area into other parts of the floor, possibly rotting the wooden structures under and around the pan witch leads to unsightly water stains or falling plaster seen in ceilings beneath the shower. But this type of leak can also result from faulty workmanship. I have seen it not only in old floors, but in ones only a year old!
